It is so easy to leave all our hard-earned health habits at home when we leave home for a holiday. We often feel overwhelmed by all the new tastes, aromas and what is generally a laid-back atmosphere. Somehow, discipline always seems to get left behind, with holiday weight gain spoiling the fun time and again.
Let me tell you, you are going to be no fun on a holiday if you take all your strict day-to-day rules and regulations with you. Of course you have to be able to let go a bit. But don’t overdo things. Have some fun and by all means, go for some treats. As long as you compensate with extra activity, you should be fine.
The first secret is preparation. Impulse food buys are a big problem if you are on holiday. You are out of your regular routine and you probably don’t have your regular stand-by snacks available. Make sure you have some fruit, nuts and baked pretzels close by to help you out if the hunger pangs come knocking. Remember that nuts are high in fat, so limit these. At your destination, try to plan ahead. Opt for low-fat snacks. Make sure you have a supply of bottled water, to prevent you from guzzling sugar-laden soda. Keep in mind that most alcoholic drinks are also very high in calories. Eat a good breakfast to prevent a serious hunger-driven binge later on. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower-fat option when ordering meals. Most establishments will be only too happy to accommodate you.
Remember, your aim is to burn more calories than you consume. That is the only way to ensure that you don’t gain weight on holiday. So, if you want to treat yourself with a special meal, try to make up for it with a session at a gym, a few hours of dancing, a bike ride or a long hike. Walk as much as you can. Bypass the lifts and climb stairs. Take a resistance band and a set of dumbbells with you, as well as some upbeat workout music. Use these tools while watching television, rather than just slouching on a couch. You can undo a lot of the overeating damage with a bit of effort in your hotel room.
