The study was done at the University of Maryland and the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In a control group who did only stretching exercises, this result was absent.
BBC News reported about another stroke survivor study in which virtual reality technology was successfully used to ‘trick’ stroke patients into improving their walking pace. In this case, a specially adapted treadmill which displays moving images, was used to increase endurance, stamina and strength. According to the report, the images ‘trick’ the patient’s brain into thinking they are walking slowly. This encourages and motivates them to up their speed.
This type of treadmill exercise for stroke patients can also help to restore confidence - a crucial aspect during rehabilitation. The symptoms of a stroke can leave survivors scared, without motivation and unsteady on their feet.
